Jamaican Beef Patty Recipe.

Ingredients:

For the pastry dough:
Ingredients:

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon turmeric powder (optional, for color)
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
1/2 cup ice water
For the beef filling:
Ingredients:

1 pound ground beef
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 cloves of garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
1/4 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup beef broth or water
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Salt and black pepper to taste

Recipe Instructions:

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, turmeric powder (if using), and salt for the pastry dough.
Add the cold butter cubes to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingertips to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Gradually add the ice water, a few tablespoons at a time, and mix until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overmix. If the dough feels dry, add a little more water.
Gather the dough into a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow it to rest.
Meanwhile, prepare the beef filling. In a skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic, and sauté until softened and fragrant.
Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon or spatula.
Stir in the thyme, paprika, allspice, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Cook for an additional 2 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
Add the breadcrumbs and beef broth or water to the skillet. Stir well to combine, then simmer for a few minutes until the mixture thickens slightly. Remove from heat and let it cool.
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about 1/8-inch thickness. Use a round cookie cutter or a glass to cut out circles of dough (approximately 5-6 inches in diameter).
Place a spoonful of the cooled beef filling onto one half of each dough circle. Fold the other half over the filling to form a half-moon shape. Use a fork to crimp the edges and seal the patty.
Repeat the process with the remaining dough and filling.
Arrange the patties on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with a beaten egg or milk for a golden crust (optional).
Bake the patties in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry turns golden brown.
Remove from the oven and let the patties cool for a few minutes before serving.
