2 cups dried sorrel petals
8 cups water
1 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
4-6 whole cloves
1 cinnamon stick
1-2 slices of fresh ginger
Juice of 1 lime or lemon
Rum or red wine (optional)
Ice cubes
Fresh mint leaves, for garnish (optional)
In a large pot, bring the water to a boil.
Add the dried sorrel petals, cloves, cinnamon stick, and ginger slices to the boiling water.
Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to infuse.
Remove the pot from heat and let the sorrel mixture cool to room temperature.
Strain the sorrel mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a pitcher, discarding the solids.
Stir in the granulated sugar until dissolved. Adjust the amount of sugar to your desired sweetness.
Add the juice of one lime or lemon to the pitcher and stir well.
If desired, add a splash of rum or red wine for an extra kick (optional).
Refrigerate the sorrel drink for a few hours or until chilled.
Fill glasses with ice cubes and pour the chilled sorrel drink into each glass.
Garnish with fresh mint leaves (optional).
Stir the sorrel drink before serving.
