4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 ¾ cups buttermilk
1 tablespoon honey or granulated sugar (optional)
1 cup raisins or currants (optional)
Butter, for serving (optional)
Preheat the oven:
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.
Mix the dry ingredients:
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
Add the wet ingredients:
Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk.
If desired, add honey or granulated sugar for a touch of sweetness.
Stir the ingredients together until they form a sticky dough.
Add optional ingredients:
If desired, fold in raisins or currants into the dough until evenly distributed. This is optional but adds a lovely sweetness and texture to the bread.
Shape the dough:
Transfer the dough to a well-floured surface.
Knead the dough lightly for about a minute, just until it comes together and is no longer sticky.
Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on the prepared baking sheet.
Score the loaf:
Use a sharp knife to make a shallow cross-shaped cut on the top of the loaf. This helps the bread bake evenly.
Bake the bread:
Place the baking sheet with the dough in the preheated oven.
Bake for about 35-40 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Cool and serve:
Remove the Irish soda bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack.
Once cooled, slice the bread and serve it as is or with a spread of butter.
