For the Dough:
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon active dry yeast
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup warm milk
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
1/4 cup warm water
For the Red Bean Paste Filling:
1 1/2 cups cooked red beans (adzuki beans)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
Prepare the Red Bean Paste Filling:
In a saucepan, combine cooked red beans and granulated sugar. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the beans become soft and the mixture thickens. This should take about 10-15 minutes.
Remove from heat and let the red bean mixture cool slightly.
Transfer the mixture to a blender or food processor. Add unsalted butter and blend until you achieve a smooth paste consistency. Set aside.
Prepare the Dough:
In a large bowl, combine all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, active dry yeast, and salt.
Make a well in the center and pour in warm milk, melted butter, and warm water.
Mix the ingredients together until a dough forms.
Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
Assemble the Buns:
Punch down the risen dough to release the air. Transfer it back to the lightly floured surface and knead for a minute.
Divide the dough into small portions (about 2 tablespoons each). Roll each portion into a ball.
Flatten each ball with your palm and place about 1 tablespoon of the red bean paste filling in the center.
Gather the edges of the dough and pinch them together to seal the filling. Roll the dough gently to form a smooth bun.
Repeat the process with the remaining dough portions and filling.
Place the filled buns on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving some space between them to allow for expansion. Cover the buns with a damp cloth and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
Bake the buns in the preheated oven for about 15-18 minutes or until they turn golden brown.
Remove from the oven and let the buns cool on a wire rack.
Serve the Red Bean Paste Buns warm or at room temperature as a delightful sweet treat.
