Zest of 1 orange
1/2 cup mixed dried fruits (such as raisins, currants, and cranberries)
1/4 cup chopped nuts (such as almonds or walnuts)
Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, for serving (optional)
Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease a baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
Prepare the Bread:
Spread the softened butter on both sides of each slice of Italian bread.
Arrange the Bread:
Arrange the buttered bread slices in the greased baking dish, overlapping them slightly to create layers.

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, lemon zest, and orange zest until well combined.
Add the Dried Fruits and Nuts:
Sprinkle the mixed dried fruits and chopped nuts over the arranged bread slices in the baking dish, distributing them evenly.

Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the custard is set and the top is golden brown.
